Lore

Image:leftquote.pngScenic place, isn't it? Hills alive with necromancers, a rotting and corrupted forest, and a positively charming village that's been blighted by the dead. You should stick around, it's really... something else.Image:rightquote.png

Necromancy in Lithmeria is a touchy subject - it's at best maligned, and at worst might find you dead in an alley just for speaking of it - and no group better displays why than the Brethren of Anguish. Originally a minor, secretive necromantic cult that formed in the wake of a few high-ranking dismissals from the Ebon Tower, they thrived on the pervasive discontent and mistrust among those less fortunate and built up a sizeable presence - and then, they struck. Wisely deciding that they had no hope of converting a garrisoned Sovereign town, they instead struck at a place that had been deemed inconsequential and thus never properly supported - the village of Greyrise in the Rondan Foothills.

Through trickery, subtlety, and no small amount of magic, they infiltrated and prepared the community for their inevitable day of reckoning, and what a reckoning it was: in one night of fire, blood, and death; the village of Greyrise was no more. The dead rose again as the undead vassals of the Brethren, while the scant few survivors fled, forming a ragtag resistance, the hope within them burning away day by day as their promised relief fails to come. And even amongst them, hushed whispers suggest that some have fallen to some even darker fate...

Now, Greyrise stands as a nightmarish tribute to the enigmatic darkness the Brethren serve, a cursed ghost town in a sense all too real. The Rondans themselves are slowly being transformed into a blighted wasteland, a corruption spread daily by the tireless efforts of the Brethren and their undead workforce. Even now, however, the Sovereignty has failed to commit their power to a problem they are most assuredly aware of, and thus the influence of the Brethren of Anguish grows: not unchecked, but certainly unstopped.

And while the living must rest... the dead continue on inexorably.
