Explanation

Merchantry makes the world go 'round. The common skill of Merchantry contains the basic abilities for selling goods, running a shop, and making simple goods such as personal stationary.

Merchantry, and indeed all common skills, once mastered branch into a trio of second tier skills in a fashion similar to the class skills (though lacking a third tier). Merchantry's second tier skills are Brewing and Smithing, and skill of Shipbuilding which is used to design and build those varied trading vessels and warships which ply the oceans.

Within Merchantry, near the pinnacle, is the ability of Artisanry which lets you learn Artisan skills. Artisan skills have only 3 ranks: Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master. Each rank gives you access to new items to be made, or new enhancements for existing item types. Apprentice Tailoring for example lets you make any normal clothing item, Journeyman lets you stitch certain magical symbols, and Master lets you create magical clothing items.

In total there are five available Artisan skills:

ARTISAN TRAIN <skill>

Artisan skills are what allow you to make the goods that people use on a regular basis. While those things used in battle are made by going on to specialize in Second Tier skills; common, everyday goods are made with Artisan skills. You can view all the artisan skills and your level of training in them with the ARTISAN command. ARTISAN HELP will show you the commands for your various artisan skills and also what each rank acquired allows you to make.

ARTISAN TRAIN <skill> will let you spend lessons to increase your level of training in one of those skills. There are three ranks (in addition to the starting rank of Untrained). They are Apprentice, Journeyman, and Master, and will cost you 10, 15, and 20 lessons respectively. As a generality: Apprentice rank allows you to make items that are decorative in nature, Journeyman rank will allow you to make utility items, and at Master rank will let you create/enhance items to give a bonus to combat or something related to it.
