When a magically-induced string of earthquakes rocked northern Aspalaria, the Ebon Tower was the first on the scene. What they found was mystifying - the shattered ruins of a city they'd never known to exist, populated by the (at the time, unconscious) remnants of an unknown race. When they finally found one who was not incapacitated, the meeting was initially tense - weapons were drawn and threats were exchanged before the Aspalarians finally learned of their identity. The mysterious race was known as the Ephemerals: having previously existed out of phase with reality, it was their machinations that brought them abruptly into it. Though they refused to explain any further, the clear magical attunement of the race led an initially-reluctant Sovereignty to lend their full might to the restoration of their city - Lerythe, now a bastion of Sovereign might rivalling New Caledra - and race. Though grateful, the Ephemeral elders have still refused to offer any insight on the cataclysmic event that brought them into reality or their nature, leading to a divide between them and the newer, Aspalarian-born generation that has begun diving deeply into the truth behind their own existence, shedding much of the arrogance of their elders but sharing their aloof nature.

Having merged almost flawlessly into Aspalarian culture, the Ephemerals hold a fair share of the population despite their considerably slowed birth rates. Their magical nature has led to many being inducted as Arcanists - the first non-Imperial Archmage, Arina Vaylenir, is an Ephemeral - and the Mediators are primarily Ephemeral as well, their spiritual nature resonating deeply with much of the new generation.

In the east, Ephemerals are almost unheard of - defectors are infrequent and none were knocked out in Teladiri lands, making them objects of curiosity. Rumors abound that the Paragon Circle has felt a primal connection, though whether this relates to the Ephemerals having an elemental nature or something else has yet to be seen.

Ephemerals resemble shorter, more lithe Imperials with the peculiar trait of being faintly translucent. The reasons for this resemblance are unknown, and the source of much curiosity both among the newer generation and the Imperials themselves.
