The Great Dragons of Lithmeria are more than merely beings of tremendous power. They are primal, elemental forces that twist the world before them, manipulating it in their own unique ways to better serve designs known only to them. Much about them is a mystery, including their exact number. Most scholars agree that there are likely less than ten but only six have been identified and confirmed by reputable sources. Sages do leave room for the possibility that the total number of dragons is actually much higher but that the remainder are dormant or absent from space occupied by mortals, but this is considered unlikely.
Though each dragon is utterly unique, there are vague groupings. The male dragons, Adarrdanothos, Shydelimnuthaeos and Gaerontareos seem primarily endowed with physical gifts and their realm is that of the material. Adarrdanothos is a living engine of destruction, culling all before him to seize control of locales that take his fancy for reasons of his own. Shydelimnuthaeos is a general beyond compare, a tactical genius forever pitting mortals against one another to hone his skills. Gaerontareos dwells deep below the earth, forever searching the subterranean world for something of infinite value.
In contrast, the female dragons are immeasurably powerful practitioners of the magical and mental arts. Vadhalashaer studies the stars above and the history of the world below, a psychic powerful enough to simultaneously teach all those that would learn historical lessons wherever they may be. Cenyrhallisimaer has vanished from the world mere decades ago, but her disappearance has revealed a conspiracy of enthralled servants that permeated every layer of society on both continents. Yentrarilmaer appears at first glance to be vain and capricious, collecting the beautiful and endlessly fretting over her appearance but her façade hides a mind with schemes of complexity beyond imagining.
The true impact of the various dragons on the course taken by history is too staggering to contemplate. Each has altered the fate of thousands over the course of the millennia, irresistible fulcrums of destiny around which entire generations turn. If nothing else, the dragons are a powerful lesson in humility for those like the Archmages or the Paragon Circle who would otherwise have every reason to believe that theirs is the pinnacle of power upon Lithmeria. In a world where the Gods are distant and surreal, the Great Dragons are a reminder that there are forces beyond any man can fathom.
