Hand-trained by the Ebon Tower, the Arcanists are among the Sovereignty's brightest magical minds. While some Tower graduates are immersed in controversy, very few would question the legitimacy of an Arcanist - each having endured the scrutiny of the Grand Magus himself before graduation.
Rigorous training combined with vast sources of information (and, some rumor, a magical conduit beneath or within the Tower itself) has made their connection with the Source second nature - while fresh graduates frequently rely on incantations to bring a spell into being as their power matures, the more experienced typically need little more than the proper gesture. Their training revolves more around the tactical - control and manipulation of allies and enemies - and thus most eschew the flashy and excessive in favor of subtlety and effectiveness.
